Words of Wisdom from Gopher Legend Greg Wicklund
Minneapolis Roosevelt alum Greg Wicklund enjoys helping out the Teddies girls’ tennis team.
Greg Wicklund is not just any tennis pro. The Minneapolis native led Roosevelt to multiple state tournaments, finishing with a 43-1 record. He then guided the Golden Gophers to the Big Ten Championship in 1981, ending a 72-year drought for the University. Wicklund was the Big Ten Singles Champion that very same season.
The USTA Northern Hall of Fame inductee has been teaching at Edina Country Club since 1982 while continuing to coach his beloved Teddies.
What's your best memory playing at Roosevelt?
Looking back on my days at Roosevelt, just making the varsity team was a thrill since I had just started playing tennis. Reaching the state tournament a couple of times was a goal for myself and the team, but a standout memory was having the team over to our house after each match. Sitting on the deck, my mom would make lemonade and cookies for everyone, and Coach Bucky Freeburg would come over and have a gin and tonic with my dad. Coach Freeburg was a fantastic coach who also led the hockey team, and he recruited many great hockey athletes to join the tennis team, which made us much tougher.
Are you still involved with the Teddy Tennis program?
I do enjoy working with the girls' team — they are lots of fun, eager to learn, and I always enjoy giving back to Teddy Tennis as much as I can. Coach Jack Nelson has done a fantastic job with the Roosevelt girls' tennis team. He keeps it fun, motivates the girls, and is very dedicated to the program. The team has improved every year, and I’m looking forward to seeing what they do next season.

In 1981, you helped the Gophers to their first Big Ten Championship since 1933 (72 years). How did it feel as a local guy leading the U after such a long championship drought?
Playing for the Golden Gophers was a dream come true. We had an awesome team under Coach Jerry Noyce, and winning the Big Ten my senior year was a huge goal for us. I learned so much from playing under great coaching and against a tough schedule throughout the year. Our team was fantastic with so many good players from all over, which really helped improve my game.
What's so special about Edina Country Club? What does it offer racquet players and families?
Edina Country Club has been a special place for me for 43 years. When I first got the job, I’ll always remember my dad telling me that “ECC was a premier club and job.” I’ve felt very lucky and fortunate to work there with so many great members and talented people. Over the years, I’ve seen many good athletes come through ECC who have gone on to play high school and college tennis. It’s been an incredible experience meeting and working with the Edina community.

Signing up for lessons can be intimidating. Any advice for tennis players out there who might be hesitant but want to improve?
The best advice I can give to someone just getting into the game is to try to join a group or take private lessons. Get the technique and foundation down, then get out there and play with people. Playing is more important than drilling, and having good equipment always helps. Mike and Mimzy Lynne and their staff at Michael Lynne’s Tennis Shop do an excellent job of taking care of all your tennis needs.
What's your teaching style?
My teaching style focuses on teaching the easiest and best way based on the player’s ability. I emphasize keeping it simple, focusing on the contact point, having excellent footwork, and always having fun. I’ve always enjoyed the teaching aspect of the game and have learned so much over the years. As an “old pro,” I’ve gained a lot of knowledge through playing, observing, and learning from other pros about the finer aspects of the game.
What keeps you coming back to the court every day? Why do you love it so much?
I always enjoy getting out on the court, moving around, getting the exercise, and enjoying the outdoors. When you love the game, it’s easy to go to work every day.
Who's your favorite player to watch today?
I really miss Roger Federer. He was always one of my favorites. I’ve also been focusing more on the women’s game recently. Players like Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, and Elena Rybakina are always fun to study and watch. The women’s game has come a long way!
Mimzy Lynne and Karin Wicklund
How long have you known Michael and Mimzy Lynne? What makes them so special, along with their staff and selection?
I’ve known Mike and Mimzy for many years. They’ve been an incredible addition to the tennis community, giving back so much to the game and supporting so many people. Their tennis shop and staff have been excellent, and they really care about their customers. It’s always fun going in there and chatting with them, and we all appreciate having such a great tennis shop in a convenient location.
