Bill Crawford has led a lifetime of service. The Marine Corps and Vietnam War veteran is spearheading several different initiatives supporting military families, kids, and the community. An avid tennis player, Bill sat down with us to talk about his programs.

Tell us about your military service and how you started the North Star Marine Veterans?

I served in the Marine Corps from 1965 to 1969 and am a Vietnam Veteran. When I retired, I wanted to give back and saw a need to help our military veterans. I became a life member of the Marine Corps League and the Vietnam Veterans Association. In 2015, I co-founded the North Star Marine Veterans, a 501(c)(3) local charity. Our mission is to provide aid to disabled veterans, their widows and children, active-duty military in distress in our community, and to support youth programs that foster good citizenship and patriotism.

What are the different types of charitable work that you and the North Star Marine Veterans do?

Our efforts span a variety of impactful initiatives. At the Minnesota Veterans Home in Hastings, we’ve furnished a recreation room with vintage pinball machines, equipped their wood shop, contributed funds for a transit van, and supported their house account during the holidays.

For the MCJROTC (Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) program at Como Park High School, we’ve funded field trips, purchased field equipment such as bikes, fishing gear, and canoes, and established a scholarship award program.

For Toys for Tots, we assist by rounding up volunteers to sort toys and help purchase cleaning supplies and equipment for their warehouse.

Why is this work so important to you?

Helping veterans and fostering a sense of community are deeply personal to me. These men and women have given so much, and it’s incredibly fulfilling to support them, whether it’s through aiding veterans, empowering youth, or contributing to patriotic programs.

How long have you been playing tennis?

I’ve been playing tennis for over 40 years and have been a member of Life Time Fitness since January 1989. Since retiring, I try to play several times a week, as time permits. I really love the game. Tennis has always been a passion of mine. It keeps me active, sharp, and connected with others.

How long have you known Michael and Mimzy Lynne?

I’ve known Michael and Mimzy for 35 years, and I’m proud to call them my friends. They are truly wonderful and caring people who give so generously to our community. I love them both.
